Overview
Charles is a shareholder in the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Trial practice groups. He represents clients in state and federal courts in complex commercial and real estate disputes, including partitions, condemnations, quiet title actions, commercial evictions, boundary disputes, and foreclosures.
His practice also encompasses partnership disputes, fraud and other business torts, business divorces, lender liability, environmental matters, homeowners’ association disputes, oil and gas matters, trade secret litigation, and a broad range of other civil matters. Charles also has experience handling appeals, regulatory investigations, and domestic and international arbitrations.
Experience & Results
- Following a five-day jury trial in Denver District Court in December 2025, obtained a verdict for the plaintiff on a breach-of-contract claim arising from the defendant’s failure to pay developer fees. Secured judgments totaling more than $775,000 and successfully defended against a counterclaim seeking approximately $1 million. The dispute involved the development of the Stanly Ranch Resort in Napa, California.
- Obtained complete dismissal of tort claims against a Fortune 200 company in a case seeking more than $1 billion in damages.
- Partitioned a 10,000-acre ranch located partly in Las Animas County, Colorado, with the minority owners receiving more than their pro rata share of the acreage. The matter required coordination with attorneys and courts in New Mexico and Texas.
- Prevailed on summary judgment for commercial tenants in a shopping center dispute, obtaining a ruling that the landlord had improperly charged the tenants for a new roof.
- Served as local counsel to a national bank in a range of litigation matters, including matters protecting the bank’s interests in a substantial asset portfolio.
- Quieted title on behalf of the University of Colorado Boulder and private developers in furtherance of several large-scale development projects. Also successfully obtained easements and other means of access to landlocked properties for individuals and developers.
- Obtained multiple civil theft judgments following trials and evidentiary hearings, including judgments under Colorado’s Mechanics’ Lien Trust Fund Statute, C.R.S. § 38-22-127.
- Prevailed in AAA commercial and construction arbitrations involving a wide range of business and construction claims.
- Tried more than 30 cases to judgment, including jury and bench trials, and resolved more than 150 cases through settlement, including numerous settlements for insurance policy limits.
